The history of S.T.Dupont house began in 1872, when Simon Tissot Dupont, a young nephew of Francois Dupont, a famous royal portrait painter of Napoleon III, moved to Paris. Upon his arrival he established a company producing beautiful and high quality leather accessories for travelers. The first letters of his name became the name of the brand. The founder didn’t want to make his pieces cheap, so he used only high quality materials during production.
One of S.T.Dupont innovations was the lacquer, the raw materials for which were supplied in small quantities. The secret of this special lacquer was in ingredients, which could be collected only in 4 months of the year.
The process of applying the lacquer is still kept in secret by the company. First it was used as enamel for metal elements on the travel bags. But today practically each piece is covered with it.
In 1952 S.T.Dupont introduced something entirely new to the world. It was a new lighter. The prototype for its shape was a New-York skyscraper. The color was vivid due to the lacquer, and extra shine was added with the help of gold, silver, and brilliant inlaid. The process of this lighter creation hasn’t changed a lot for the last 60 years. It is still hand-worked, while the quality is controlled on each of the 600 steps of production.
In 1972 the assortment of the company was enriched with writing utensils. The first piece was a silver pen totally resembling the main achievement of that time, namely the Concord aircraft. Since that time the brand started production of pens made of gold, silver, and platinum decorated with colored lacquer and gems, which could be easily visible even from a long distance.
Soon after that centuries-old traditions of impeccable elegance were revived in jewelry like tie clips, cuff-links, belts, and other accessories manufactured under the brand of S.T.Dupont. In 1998 the brand introduced the first two perfume lines for her and for him. Since that time the perfume is produced in duet aromas: Essence Pure, Passenger, 58 Avenue Montaigne, Signature. Throughout the century different people like the queens of the Great Britain, Denmark, and Siam, dukes of Windsor, Rothschild family members, maharajah Patiala, and other important persons used S.T.Dupont pieces.
